Every Thursday, Svveat Stories managing editor Lindsay MacAdam tackles your most pressing fitness questions—this week, the best Valentine’s Day workouts for couples (and friends!) in the GTA.
I’d love to celebrate Valentine’s Day in a way that doesn’t involve stuffing my face with steak and chocolate cake and spending a ton of money—or, at least, I’d like to exercise before I do all of the above, so I feel less guilty about it. Are there any free Valentine’s Day workouts in Toronto that are suitable for couples?
— Seeking My Swole-mate
I’m with you on this. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than with a sweaty workout with your partner. Exercise releases endorphins and endorphins make us happy and, at the end of the day, don’t we all just want to be happy?
Lucky for us, there are a whole bunch of free workouts in Toronto on Feb. 14. Some are regular weekly events and others are special pop-ups, but all of them would be a perfect way to spend quality time with your loved ones. So take a peek, choose your favourite and promptly inform your S.O. that you’ll be earning your dinner on Tuesday.
Is your partner intimidated by running with a group? No sweat! NRC Toronto recently added a Ready, Set, Go option to all three of its weekly runs. Beginners are taught the running fundamentals before being put to work in a fun, hour-long workout combining running drills and strength training exercises.
For the more advanced running duo, Adidas Runners Toronto offers a weekly interval training session that will push you and your significant other to your collective limits. Leave your excuses at home and prepare to be challenged by a tireless squad that will support and encourage you through every step of the torture—er, workout.
If running doesn’t hold the key to your heart, but you still want to work up a sweat with your sweetie, HIIT with Resilience Fitness might be just the thing. This high-intensity interval-style class incorporates a variety of body-weight exercises in quick succession to keep your heart pumping and your muscles guessing. And, hey, they might even throw in some partner exercises on this special occasion.
Want to squeeze in your workout during your lunch hour so you can spend the evening indulging? The Sony Centre’s got you covered. Ask your partner to meet you for a midday flow, and then head back to the office feeling utterly smitten with yourself.
Maybe it’s your mind that needs the TLC on this international day of L-O-V-E. Learn to quiet the internal noise, calm the body and relax the soul, bringing a new sense of clarity to all of your relationships.
If injuries have sidelined your fitness game, or your body just needs a rest, let restorative yoga be your medicine. Long, blissful holds give you plenty of time to gaze lovingly into your companion’s eyes. Bonus: You won’t break a sweat, so you can head straight to dinner afterwards.
Round up your gal pals and head to lululemon’s The Attic at 318 Queen Street West, where you’ll flow to an empowering playlist of girl groups and you’ll leave with a full heart and a bendy spine. Unlike the others, though, this class will cost you—your $10 will help support the Tribe Fitness crew that’s always offering up free fitness to the community.
