I’m a marathon runner, cycling coach, yoga teacher, triathlete, physical education consultant, and founder of Tribe Toronto fitness. I’ve been in the fitness industry for almost 20 years and it’s my love for building community, and connections, and all things heart pounding that gets me up in the morning.
I started Tribe in 2013, but have been leading group fitness for almost 20 years. We hosted our first free Tribe community run that November and in our first year we lead 153 free run and yoga workouts total. Social media was our tool to spread the word. I remember after our 2nd or 3rd run I had over 73 twitter alerts from the group sharing and inviting others. It was never about me, always about connecting people and that night confirmed it.
Tribe has simply been a way to give back to my city and community in a way that adds to the lives of those who are present. Not only are we connecting the neighbourhood and making this big city seem a lot smaller, we’re promoting active living and encouraging a healthy and happy lifestyle.
Our community runs and yoga classes are inclusive and fun. Depending on the day, people can anticipate running between 5-10kms. Our free yoga classes are all about differentiated movement and music. Participants will work within the needs of their body to get the best practice for them. Lots of variations allow for new yogis to practice alongside those that are more experienced. This differentiation makes us unique as well as our music – it’s not uncommon to flow to Drake, Beyonce, or the Jurassic Park theme song!
For those that are new to Toronto fitness, we suggest browsing through hosts on social media first. Do their goals align with yours? If so, then give it a try. We hear many new runners share how the hardest part is getting out the door to join the crew. With Tribe, you don’t need to worry about that. When we say “no one gets left behind” we mean it!
